The aid cuts announced in the series of budgets over the past 20 months is very bleak news indeed for the world's poorest people. The cut announced in the December 2008 budget of €25 million is the fifth consecutive cut in the overseas aid budget since June 2008. It was cut by €45 million in July 2008, another €15 million in October and by €95 million in February. In the supplementary budget last April another €100 million was taken off the budget. This means that in 2009, aid spending was been cut by €220 million. These cuts will have a devastating impact on the world's poorest and most vulnerable people and are far beyond what would be considered, fair, proportionate or just.
Dóchas, the Irish Association of Non-Govermental Development Organisations, of which Skillshare is a member, is leading the campaign against the cuts.
